President’s Letter – September 19, 2019

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

How do you answer the question, “What is Rotary?” I was at a cocktail reception this evening and met a Millennial businessman who noticed the Rotary pin on my lapel. He asked me what it was for. I told him it was for Rotary and asked him whether he knew what Rotary was. He did not. I explained that Rotary is an international organization that has been around for more than 100 years, and has more than one million members in more than 35,000 clubs around the world. I told him that Rotary has worked successfully to eradicate Polio, and through philanthropy and volunteerism improved communities at home and around the world by helping poor communities get access to health care and clean water, building libraries and schools, cleaning beaches, and building parks. And I described the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara’s weekly meetings, our foundation, the money we give to local charities, the volunteer work our members do, and the assistance we provide to vulnerable families in Guatemala.

When I finished, and saw that he was nodding with interest and absorbing all that I had said, I invited him to a club meeting if he could make time on a Friday at lunchtime, and was interested in seeing what our meetings are like. He said he was and gave me his card so that I could send him an email to follow up.

You and I know there is still a need for what we do in Santa Barbara, and there are people who want to be a part of our community — our family — of Rotary. Opportunities to introduce potential members to the club turn up unexpectedly, and all we have to do is wear our Rotary pins so that the opportunities can find us!

It will take time to grow our club. But if we remember why the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara exists, execute our mission well, and tell the community about it consistently, our club will grow.

One of the reasons our club exists is for fellowship with like-minded people. I’m looking forward to spending time with people who share my passion for tacos on Friday at our annual picnic!

Warmest regards,
Dean
