President’s Letter – September 11, 2018

Thank you to:
– Steve Baker for graciously greeting our members and leading us in the Flag Salute.
– Todd McGinley for providing an amusing invocation for anybody who has tried to go on a diet.
– Davis for not being gonged as we belted out “Stand By Me” in honor of our speaker.
– Michael Baker for jousting with fellow members during his fake news segment while adding a bit of class to the Sergeant at Arms position.
– Paul Didier for attempting to answer two different 100-year-old questions. Paul needs to work on his deserts though because he was unable to identify the Moon Pie.
– Big Applause to Jon Wilson who returned after having double knee replacement 5-6 weeks ago. He was moving well and pain free. Jon said it was no big deal so I will be thinking of him the next time I need to take a splinter out.

Fireside Chat
We mixed it up by having one of our best guest interviewers, Steve Milam took the mic and interviewed Jo Ann Mermis. Steve did a wonderful job as we learned Jo Ann is from Kansas and enjoyed all types of athletics when she was growing up. Moving to California sounds like it was a perfect match for Jo Ann who settled into the real estate brokerage business. Obviously, she has had a very successful career, as she is now managing Sotheby’s local offices. Her, and Wes St. Clair are still working together and I expect they will continue to provide exceptional service to their clients. She is proud to say that she still loves helping people find their dream homes. With six grandchildren and two daughters JoAnn enjoys getting together with family and watching the grandchildren grow up. She also provides assistance at the local prison, and has been a proud Rotarian since 2003. Please say hello to Jo Ann at your next meeting now that you know her better.

Speaker Presentation
Our speaker was Michelle Meyering who is the Executive Director of the Santa Barbara Police Activities League “PAL”. Michelle coordinates the activities of many after school programs to help young people in our community. Michael Baker provided strong praise of Michelle and said since she joined PAL the attendance has increased and they are very well organized. After hearing about some of the diverse programs that are being offered, it is no wonder the youth in our community are drawn to PAL. Michelle should be very proud of running such a valuable organization in our community.

Important dates and events to remember.
– Our Family Picnic is Sunday 9/16 from 2:00 to 5:00 at Tuckers Grove. Carlos Cortez is coordinating the effort and promises to make it fun for the kids so please plan to join us and even bring a friend. A taco bar, games and beverages will be provided.
– Do not forget to sign up for the 100 year Gala Party on Saturday night 10/20/18 and if you are having trouble just ask Matt Nehmer for help.
– We will be dark this week due to our Family Picnic but I look forward to another fun meeting the following Friday. We will hear from Helen Fabian who is an attorney that specializes in employment law. She will share stories about doing business in California and what you need to remember to stay out of trouble.

I would pay close attention Mr. Stretchberry and Mr. Musgrove.

Your President,
Mike Bieza
