President’s Letter – October 30, 2019

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

I love this time of year. Do you? Summer becomes fall. Leaves turn color if you are in the right part of town (or if you can get out of town to go leaf peeping). Change is in the air. It is a reminder of the natural cycles. Nothing stays the same in this beautiful world.

The Rotary Club of Santa Barbara is experiencing some change. Just when we were starting to settle into the new routine of weekly meetings at Mulligan’s, our dear longtime club administrator announced that she will be leaving us for a new opportunity. Teresa, we wish you well, and hope you find success and satisfaction in your new endeavor. We will miss you.
At our meeting on Friday we will take a few minutes to celebrate Teresa’s years of service. I hope you will be there to share your favorite “Teresa story”.

Most Rotary clubs never experience the luxury of a paid administrator to help them run their club. The board is developing procedures to streamline club administration as much as possible and to try to make sure nothing falls through the cracks. Despite our best efforts, I am sure there will be hiccups and a few bumps in the road. I apologize in advance, and hope you will forgive us for any inconveniences that occur as we develop and implement these new procedures. We might ask for your help along the way, and we will certainly want your feedback. This is another opportunity to figure out what kind of club we want to be, and I am looking forward to traveling that path with all of you.

Change is also our program on Friday. The Stan Roden and John Kelly will show us how communities can come together even on climate change. They won’t be here to try to sell you a position the issue, but their nonpartisan organization has ideas that are focused on finding common ground solutions. The wildfires that are raging in Los Angeles, Ventura County, and in the north of our state are a powerful reminder that climate change is not merely an academic or political issue. I hope to see you there.

To those of you who have already registered, THANK YOU! For those who haven’t please remember to register using the link in the email you received. That way we will know how much food to order. We give Mulligan’s the number of expected attendees on Wednesday afternoon.

Warmest regards,
Dean
