President’s Letter – November 21, 2018

Another wild meeting got started with Kathleen Blake proudly leading the Flag Salute and Teresa Thornburgh providing a thought provoking invocation.  The song Hakuna Matata was very appropriate considering the speaker and we made it through without gonging ourselves.  Feeling somewhat inspired, yours truly handed out multiple fines with worthy recipients being: Don Jack, Steve Millard, Pamela Galvin, Kathleen Blake and Aaron Spechler.  To be honest, I felt a little bit like a reverse game show host for a while there.  Talking about game show hosts, it was exciting to see Paul Didier and Marlee King battle it out for the Raggedy Ann and Raggedy Andy Dolls in the 100 year old trivia game.  Steve Peterson was the eventual winner of the dolls as was the Foster Kids Christmas Gift Program after he paid $50 to acquire these two troublemaking red heads.  If you would like to make a contribution towards the Foster Kids Christmas Gift Program, it is not too late so please see Steve Milam.
Do you remember a little over one year ago we raised funds for the Foster Youth Scholarship Program?  After disbursing a majority of the funds, we were left with $3,890 remaining and finding it challenging to properly identify worthy candidates.  So, it was decided to donate these funds to the Santa Barbara Scholarship Foundation where they will distribute these funds to the Foster Youth attending college from our community.  Barbara Robertson the Interim Director was on hand to receive this donation and expressed her gratitude with the promise to help make a difference for Foster Youth attending college.
Inspirational Moment
Joining us was Caylee Burditt, a local Rotaractor attending UCSB.  She is from the Chico Paradise area and passionately shared with us what that community is going through with the Camp Fire that has devastated their community. In a show of compassion and support our club did what it does best by raising $3,300, which Caylee will deliver to the Paradise and Chico Rotaract clubs so they have some immediate financial resources and can begin to help the victims who are suffering.  Witnessing this instantaneous form of compassion makes me proud to call myself a Rotarian!  Way to go Rotary Club of Santa Barbara and Caylee Burditt!
Speaker Presentation
Our speaker was Mat Dry who has been leading African Safari’s for nearly 10 year now.  He discussed the best areas to take a Safari, the current state of the wildlife and the different types of trips that are available.  His pictures and stories were fantastic and it made me want to plan my next vacation in this unusual and far away jewel. His information will be available on our HUB in case you are interested in looking into this type of trip for yourself.
