President’s Letter – May 20, 2020

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

As is our tradition on the Friday before Memorial Day, the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara will honor the honorable members of the United States military who died in the service of their country by not holding a regular Friday meeting this week. On behalf of the board of directors and the membership of our club, I hope you have a meaningful holiday weekend.

In the months since our town hall meeting last fall, the board and members of the club have discussed many different options to ensure that the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara is a vibrant and engaging service organization. We all want the Club to be a place where we can see our friends, network for our businesses, and know that we share a spirit of service. We want it to be affordable and accessible to new members, and make sure our meetings are of the caliber, in program and location, that we have come to expect as members.

As the board has considered the club’s options, it has sought to balance the desire of some of our members to have lunch meetings at a more upscale venue, with the desire of other members and prospective members to keep the cost of lunch down (several prospective members in the past year have specifically cited the cost of lunches as a barrier to joining). Some members suggested changing our meeting schedule to twice monthly, as some other clubs in our district have done. Other members prefer to continue meeting weekly.

At the club’s regular Zoom meeting on May 8, 2020, an idea was proposed to balance those interests, and we are grateful for the feedback. The board has approved changing our meeting schedule on an experimental basis starting July 1, 2020. We will continue to meet every week, but only two of those meetings will be formal lunch meetings at a new, more “upscale” venue. The details are still being worked out. The remaining meetings each month will be service projects and social events.

Committing to monthly service projects will help us impact our community directly, while also serving as positive public relations for the club. We hope this schedule will encourage more participation by members and their families, friends, and colleagues.

Please feel free to reach out to us or to any board members with questions, concerns, or suggestions. Our current meetings on Zoom are the highlight of the week for us, and we are grateful to stay connected to all of you during this difficult time. We can’t wait to enjoy fellowship in person, and look forward to that time.

Warmest regards,

President Elect
