President’s Letter – April 4, 2018

Once again, we met last week in Rodney’s at the DoubleTree.  Our Sergeant-at-Arms was again Michael Baker.  Good Friday Invocation was given by Jim Stretchberry.  Our guest Ian Gardner Simons led the flag salute and Bob Fatch stepped-in to lead us in an impromptu and familiar refrain of America the Beautiful.
We did have a Rotarian with a guest: me.  I was accompanied by my nephew Ian Simons, who will be matriculating into Humboldt State University.  Things went wildly fine during fine time.  A few announcements kept the Sarge busy.  Sports Day is slated for April 20 and will take place at Zodo’s- yes, we are going to roll.  Join in for some bowling, feel free to give a nod to The Dude; Jellies, robes and sunglasses welcome.
Our program featured our own members as Douglas Bowman and John Mullen gave us an update on HOW (Help One Walk) International.    It seems they didn’t ask, “how do we do this?” but rather, “we have to do this.  How?”  How they managed to get the cost of a prosthetic in Mozambique from $10,000+ down to $50 is nothing short of amazing.   Douglas and John have a presentation that really explains in plain terms that HOW International is dealing with the aftermath of landmines being sown in the land like a farm crop gone wrong.  Their statistics and persistence are really amazing and if you missed, check out their website for the whole story.  Rotarians were able to make a difference on-the-spot Friday and it looked like there were going to be quite a few recipients of our generosity.
Next up- Sally Cook from Hope Refuge will speak to us  this Friday about the critical issue of sex trafficking right here in Santa Barbara.  She will inform us as to how the issue is being addressed and how children and adults who have been trafficked can heal from the trauma of abuse, abandonment and neglect.  See you Friday!
