President’s Letter – April 19, 2017

Dear Esteemed Rotarians,
Last Friday, Dr. Charles Fenzi presented us with an informative insight into “Caring for Low Income Families in our Community”.  This was a very powerful message about our Neighborhood Clinics and the essential services they provide.  In one year, 20,000 patients were seen for 70,896 medical, dental and behavioral health visits.  89% of these patients were low Income. 7,131 were children and 11,588 were women. 5,948 of those seen were uninsured and 866 were homeless.  11,588 immunizations were given and 27,711 health promotion services visits were included. These are staggering statistics, and most of us don’t fully appreciate the health care challenges that exist in our communities. Dr. Fenzi’s presentation of the National Health Insurance program revealed to us the difficulties involved in providing health care services in our great nation.  I found it interesting that, while Obama Care has its problems, many aspects of this plan are beneficial to our citizens.  I hope we can all contribute in a positive way to improving our health care system.  As Dr. Fenzi implied, at the end of the day, we will all pay for medical services for our citizens in one way or the other.
Please continue to remember our annual blood drive and especially to include your spouse and or children who may wish to participate.
Our speaker this week will be Jill Seltzer, Managing Director of Ensemble Theatre.  The title of her talk is “The Arts.  We all know why it matters.  Or do we?”   She’ll be looking at how different communities approach the arts, and it will not be a commercial or beg-a-thon. Recognizing that the Ensemble just opened the Tennessee Williams’ play, “Baby Doll”, last weekend, she will be giving us vouchers for two tickets (purchaser’s choice of date – value $120) for the last week of “Baby Doll” performances.  The vouchers can be auctioned off for the benefit of our club.  We would like to do this on Friday.   For those who are not the lucky bidders, she’ll have a 15% off code for on-line ordering of tickets. It is a very powerful performance.
Please continue to remember to bring guests and invite your colleagues to consider SB Rotary.
Warm Regards,
James N. Stretchberry
President 2016-17
