District 5240 to Send Immunization Team to India

National polio immunization days are scheduled to take place in India on February 3- 4, 2019. Our District 5240 is putting together a team of Rotarians to participate in this activity and you’re invited to join. Even though India was declared to be “polio free” a few years ago by the World Health Organization there is a need to continue regular immunizations for young children since there are likely to be carriers of the disease in the population. Typically for every person who shows polio symptoms there are 200 to 1,000 other people in the population who are carriers of the disease who show no symptoms. This is a significant problem in locations with poor sanitation since the polio virus is spread via water.

Participation in polio immunization activity is a way to participate Rotary’s campaign to end polio worldwide in a “hands-on” way. The current schedule calls for the District 5240 team to head to India on 1/28/2019 and return to California on 2/9/2019. There will be numerous opportunities to meet with other Rotarians during the trip and even some time for sightseeing, including a visit to the Taj Mahal. The cost of the trip, including airfare is expected to be between $3,000 and $3,500. If you’re interested, the latest date to apply is 11/9/2018.
